I love it when I’m at work and every other customer tells me how great it is outside. It’s like 90-95 degrees outside, no wind, and everyone is wearing next to nothing like, a tank top, shorts, or sandals. While I’m in the store with a white shirt soaking wet, a tie that’s slowly choking the life out of me and standing in one spot with no fan to cool the perspiration on my forehead.
Customer: It’s a beautiful day outside!
(My thoughts: Oh really? It is? I can see it through the window…)
Me talking: Wow! it sure seems like it.
Customer: Yeah! It sure sucks to be inside, at least you have the air conditioner on.
(My thoughts: Are you telling me you don’t see the sweat on my face? My back is like a puddle of water…)
Me talking: I know! I wouldn’t know what to do if we didn’t have the luxury of air conditioning.
(My thoughts: That barely works…)
Customer: I’m going to go home and pop open a can of beer and swim in my pool!
(My thoughts: Hope it rains soon…)
Me talking: That sounds awesome! You have a delightful day sir!

Oh, gosh, I know. Had the same thing happen over and over again in my line today. Really, it’s gorgeous outside? And you’re going to go enjoy it since it’s going to be cold and rainy the rest of September? Good for you.
And as far as air conditioning goes… The manager at my store read some study in July that said that customers won’t notice the air being turned down as long as it’s still ten degrees cooler than it is outside. So we spent the rest of summer working in an 80-degree store and listening to customers complain that it’s too warm at the same time — because, guess what, they noticed! Of course, they all get to head to their pools, while we sweat in our ugly polo shirts for a nickel above minimum wage.
I try to be grateful just to have work, but this job is sucking the life out of me day by day.
