Breast Cancer Donations … In the checkstand

by PkWynn on September 30, 2009

All month long, checkers will be asking for donations for breast cancer awareness. All donations will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. We are required to ask customers to either donate a dollar or round up to the nearest dollar so please give us a little break when we do so. It is for a great cause and we’re happy to be apart of something that will benefit lives in the near future. As always we have very generous customers as well as some who feel that we’re pestering them into donating. A simple “yes” or “no” answer would suffice but we do get those that are ummm… interesting.

Me: Would you like to donate to breast cancer research?

The Irritated Guy: Why should I donate, I don’t have any breast.

The Irritated Mother: I have kids to feed!

Irritated Bottle Return Guy: No way! I worked hard for these cans!

Irritated Kid: Sticker?

Irritated Guy in Suite: Nah, I donated 3 weeks ago.

Irritated Co-Worker: Ah, comon… you going to ask me too!?

Irritated Car Salesman: So if I donate, can you grant me immunity to this cancer?

The store I work for runs about six of these donate-a-dollar charity drives each year, and even though I always sell well, I hate having to ask people. Every once in a while one will just go off and yell, as if it’s my fault what Corporate orders us to do.

Even worse, though, are the people who think they’re clever even though they’re their twentieth or so that same day to say, “Wish someone would donate a dollar to me!” And these are always people who just spent more on one order than I make in a week of ringing and packing their groceries.

On the other hand, at least these charity drives make me feel like my job is actually meaningful to someone other than myself.
