Breast Cancer Donations… Update

by PkWynn on October 3, 2009

How’s everyone breast cancer donations going? The response this week was great! People are donating and asking to donate which makes some of our jobs a lot easier. I used to get my feelings hurt when someone would brush me off with a “NO,” it reminded me of my senior year in high school when I was trying to get a date for prom.

Me: Would you like to round up your change for breast cancer.

Pants Sagging Gangster Kid: Nah, man I’m good.

Man in Suit: Why do you guys keep asking me!

Lady in Motorize Cart I’m paying with food stamps sonny!

Tattoo Guy: Here’s 14 cents tell your buddies not to ask me again.

  • Breast cancer hits 1 out of every 9 American women.
  • There are 100,000 new cases each year; the majority are women between 40 and 70 years old.
  • It is the leading cause of death in women aged 40 to 55 and causes more deaths than any other form of cancer from age 15 onward.

Breast cancer has a very high cure rate at over 95 percent when diagnosed early.
Keep up the good work guys!

I am also a cashier at a grocery store. I love reading this blog because well i can really relate. But when we do breast cancer donations at my store i found people more willing to donate change then actual whole dollars, so i started asking if they would round up. Usually people say yes, because they don’t want to be a jerk for denying 23 cents. But occasionally you get those naysayers. But instead of flat out saying no, they say, oh not today or not this time. And each time they say that and i am so tempted to ask if they are going to donate the next time. Do you get this?

Hey there Katie! I do as well, although I never thought about it but your right, they don’t flat out say no, its usually next time. Ah that makes me feel a lot better that many are relating. Its tough when you get a lot of “no” and it may discourage some for asking but its so much better when you get atleast 1. Our store, the card reader asks as well and when you do ask for change, they say “oh I did it already,” rather than just avoiding the question.
