Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to stay home and spend time with one another. You can smell the aroma of turkey baking in the oven from nearby neighborhoods and the laughter of people enjoying each other while feasting on their amazing home cooked meals. I have spent many Thanksgivings with other families other than my own and I spent it from the grocery store… working. This will be the 5th year that I will not spend time with my family or friends because our store will be open regular hours. Even with 10 years of experience and I am still on the bottom of the totem pole and because of that, I will have to work as the employees that have served the company for more years than I, will be able to take the time off to spend time with their love ones. It is a situation that I understand but what I don’t understand is we used to be open til 4pm so that we have the opportunity to enjoy Thanksgiving. Our company preaches that we are a “family oriented company” but I guess that really doesn’t apply to us, the workers. Sure we get paid a little extra for opening on Thanksgiving but I’m sure most of us would rather trade that in for a day of eating a hot home cooked meal in the comfort of our home. I feel for everyone that has to work on Thanksgiving and I hope you will make the very best of the holiday. Until then, I will be crossing my fingers that KFC will be open because that will be the closest thing I will eat to turkey.
Yeah, familiy oriented, if you happen to be part of the Washington, lincoln, jefferson, hamilton, or jackson family. Then you get Orientaded the crap out of.

Agreed! It seems hypocritical for a grocery store that perpetuates spending time with family around meals, won’t let their own employees have the same oppurtunity. Secondly, it doesn’t really make sense for grocery stores to stay open past 4, because honestly how many people are going to come in between 4 and midnight? Lastly, hearing people’s false sympathy for working on the holidays annoys my soul.

I’m a nurse, and I work pretty much every Thanksgiving. I get the sympathetic comments, too, from visiting family members. Don’t tell me it sucks that I have to work on Thanksgiving, bring me a piece of pie!
