Ways to Annoy your Checker #13 – Last Minute WIC Vouchers

by PkWynn on December 30, 2009

WIC stands for Women, Infants and Children provide vouchers for low income families funded by federal grants to the state. The vouchers cover basic necessities such as milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, fruits, and assorted juices for use at grocery stores. The tricky and time consuming thing about these vouchers for the checkers is that we have to check for specific items to see if they match the description of the voucher and half the time, they’re not. Checking, correcting the item then validating the voucher is a timely process. Which leads to long lines. Each voucher has an expiration date and many times customers come in to use them all at the same time before they expire.

A lady came in my line with 4 WIC vouchers that were set to expire on December 30, 2009.

Each voucher contained:

-2 (1) Gallons of milk
-2 lbs of cheese
-Up to 36 oz of cereal
-2 frozen juices
-1 16 oz peanut butter or lentils

I did this 4 times!

That’s 8 gallons of milk, 8 lbs of cheese, 8 boxes of cereal, 8 frozen juices, and 4 jars of peanut butter. That’s absurd and it was only for the month of December! The total time it took to process those orders was almost 15 minutes!

Not to be outdone, she didn’t even bother to grab the receipts…

I know its a pain, but this food helps…Esp when you dont have money to get these things…Yea, they do give you a lot tho…Who in the heck is gonna drink 8 gallons of milk tho lol…Thats two month worth of milk for my house hold…I used to have to give half of it away when I was on it years ago.

I think the most I’ve had at one time was 9… and it was past 10:00 pm, when I was the only person on the Front End. Running around to get the right peanut butter, cheese, and juice [because the lady thought processed cheese, juice cocktail, and peanut butter spread was acceptable....] with a line of customers glaring at you = Nightmare.

Yeah, I really love the concept of WIC, It’s everything that’s good about foodstamps, only, it makes sure that people don’t buy poposterous unhealthy foods with the government funded money. But, ringing up the wic, as you said, is a horrible experience. It’s the worst when the customer brings up the wrong item, and sometimes wonders why we just don’t bend the rules, unaware of how strict the government rules were on it.

I’m grateful that the program exists for those families that have the need. Thanks for putting up with the labor intensive side of redeeming the vouchers!!

I just happened to stumble upon this site and i love it! I think the most annoying thing about wic is when they dont tell me it’s wic! At our store, we have to enter the voucher first, and then scan the items. We can’t even scan the reward card! IT’s annoying because they always do this when we get a rush and we have to take the time to find the FES and get them to cancel the transaction…all while the customer is throwing a fit! I understand sometimes people need the help..but when they’re dressed to the nines and buy liquor or cigarettes after..that makes me so mad! Or when they use their foodstamps to buy nothing but junk food, but complain when they have to pay two pennies because they used a coupon. C’mon, you just got 250 dollars worth of food..for free, and all you have to do is give me two cents. That frustrates me beyond belief! …All of this and I’ve only been a cashier for about three months now.
