Even though we hear the same lame customer joke over and over again while working in the grocery store, doesn’t mean we don’t have any of our own. I like to mess with our customers sometimes because it makes the day go by a bit faster and to see what type of character they are the next time I see them.
Customer puts her reusable paper bags from our competitors on the conveyor belt for me to bag…
Me: Hey… I didn’t know we have new bags!
Awesome Customer: [She stops loading her groceries and looks up at me] Huh?
Me: This must be our new logo!
Awesome Customer: Uhh…
Me:: That’s interesting, our paper bags never had handles…
Awesome Customer: [Unsure laugh] Haha…
Me: You want any help out with your groceries?
Awesome Customer: Ummm…
Me: I was just joking with you about the bags.
Awesome Customer: Smartass! Yeah, I want a carry out. I want you to do it!
Me: You got it!
We’ve been joking ever since.
Do you have a checker that you always go to, no matter how long the lines are?

There’s this one lady who is super friendly, so I will go to her line. She just seems really genuine. LOL, I know that sounds totally corny!
And there are some that I totally avoid too!!!
Most of the checkers at my grocery store are all of 17 and can barely string a coherent sentence together, nevermind be witty and fun.
Always good to get a live one..takes away the monotony of shopping! The employees are what makes the trip worth it! Sounds like you do your best to liven things up a little!
no, but I wish I did! I used to shop at a store near my old house and they hired a fair amount of high school aged kids. They were real cute and sweet, in an absent-minded sort of way. I’m not too familiar with any particular employees at the places (multiple) I tend to frequent now. Sadly!
Nope, our customer service in my area sucks
you know I always wonder if my checker will say something when I bring a Whole Foods or Safeway bag to Winco…
our checkers arent as friendly around here.
Yeah, I definitely try to find the people I like when I check out.
However, the other day I walked up to three high school kids working the checkout…it was so hard to bite my tongue as they were talking about sex. It was fucking hilarious. I would have said something but I had nothing funny to say. And… I would have sounded old as fuck. Still funny though.
the fastest moving line is the one for me!
Don’t you just love people with a good sense of humor?
There are several great cashiers at my regular store, I do try to get in their lines but it is not an absolute. Sadly, because I shop there so frequently most of the employees in the store recognize me. There are however 2 cashiers that I avoid like the plague! They are SO rude and seem like they hate their jobs. I have to agree with the commentor on the high school age conversation it can be a real eye opener and funny as hell, but definitly can make you feel over the hill!
Great Blog!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Yours looks hilarious! : )
I definitely love friendly, sweet, funny, and dry-humor types. I go grocery shopping at whacky hours, so I feel like I never see the same people! Sad!
I am rarely in the checkstand, but I might it a point to recognize our returning customers. We have one lady that buys TAB soda everytime she comes in so we have to make sure that we have 20 cases in the front of the store at all times, cause all hell breaks loose when she can’t get it. I make sure to joke with her about it everytime she comes in. You can really tell which customers enjoy it and which customers just want to get in and out as quick as possible
Nope. Every once in a while there is one I’ll avoid, but generally they are all friendly.
Absolutely! She’s fast!
We always feel bad out the reusable bags…they’re the right thing to do but always seem like such a pain in the arse for the bagger.
I’m not sure that there is a checker I always go to, but there is one checker I always avoid! I have a grocery store beside my house, and because I like to cook alot, I visit it frequently. This one lady started to notice, and took it upon herself to befriend me, which was actually quite nice until she started telling me about her awful divorce and how she wants to kill / poison / mame her ex-husband. She then tried to get my phone number off me and followed me to the coffee shop sometimes and sat with me when I was with my other friends. I try to frequent that grocery store less, especially during the times that she usually works!
Wow I feel like the odd one out.
I don’t even look that far ahead Paul. The checker rarely makes or breaks my decision. If I get an unfriendly checker I just go with the flow. If it’s a friendly one, I enjoy that too. It’s kinda like grocery Russian Roulette!
I don’t seek out a certain line…I pretty much like all the checkers at the grocery store I go to.
But, I would never take bags from a competitor’s store to reuse. That’s just me.
I don’t do much of the shopping, but when I go to one particular store, I look for my current or former students (I am a high school Spanish teacher). After several years, they still call me SeƱor. (Sadly, it is about all some of them remember after two or three years of sitting in my classroom.)
