Ways to Annoy your Grocery Clerk #20 – Checkout Dividers

by PkWynn on February 21, 2010

Checkers, we just scan items. We keep scanning items until there are no more items to scan or if something like a divider tells us to stop. You see those 2 bars on the side of the conveyor belt? They are what divides your groceries from the next person. So please don’t assume your checker knows who’s groceries are who’s because we don’t and it’s really the customers responsibility to place the dividers.

[scanning]

beep, beep, beep…

Denied the Divider: Hey! Why is it so much?

Me: [checking the screen] Umm… I don’t know.

Denied the Divider: Did it take my saver card?

Me: Looks like it.

Denied the Divider: Wait a minute! I didn’t buy oatmeal!

Guy Behind Denied the Divider: Where’s my oatmeal?

Me:

checkout divider

Have you ever bought another persons groceries?

What about if there is a big space? Do you assume it’s still the same customer? LOL

No, I have never bought someone else’s groceries because I’m the person who grabs the divider and puts behind my groceries. To me, I think that is common courtesy to do that for the next person

Love those dividers, and am annoyed when there are no dividers at my check out.

I agree with Alicia, you should do that for the next customer as a courtesy but I’d say courtesy is a rare item in most of the supermarkets I frequent!

What I hate is when you can’t reach the dividers because there is only one or two available, and they are all the way at the front and you are at the end, and the dummy in front of you doesn’t push them closer. When I put my stuff up on the belt, and there is someone behind me, I put the divider at the end of my stuff myself.

Seems so basic, but yes i see it happen all the time.

even better… at a place I used to check out, there was this poposterous credit card reader that always went back to saying “please swipe card” when a card transaction was complete, it led to way too often, customers being confused when their transaction was over and saying things like “wait, I already swiped my card” Well, on one particular occasion, an elderly gentleman saw the message and did what it said and he swiped his card, putting it in the system. Long story short, his credit card payed for the next customers purchase. Said elderly man was long gone by the time we figured it out.

This happens to me all the time when I’m in the express lane… so i often have to ask if it’s still their groceries or if its the groceries of the person behind them. Seriously, I’m not pyschic.

Ugh! Yes! Although, to be honest, I would get into a scanning trance and put that divider aside and JUST KEEP SCANNING. Whoops!

The divider is my friend….I love the divider. I place the divider behind my soon to be belongings. I just wish shoe stores had conveyor systems and dividers. :)

No! I’m a huge fan of the divider. I’ve actually been to stores that don’t have them so I will line up grocery items (usually cans) at the end of my order and tell the checker to stop at the can line… They seem to appreciate that. They also laugh at me. But hey! It’s either that or having to do the delete thing. That’s not fun. BTDT.
