Ask a Grocery Clerk

by PkWynn on February 24, 2010

Q: On a side note: Do checkers still learn how to load the bags? At (a large, national “superstore”, big box department store chain) the checkers seem to not know how. They put all the cans in one bag, then double (or triple) it, and put maybe one box of cereal in another bag.

I work in a major supermarket and to be honest the only training I’ve done with bagging is when I first got hired. I watched a very old video on how to bag and that was it. No follow up or anything but it should be common sense. Heavy items on the bottom, light stuff on top, refrigerated items together, produce together, cleaning supplies in one bag, etc. As the years go by my technique became better and I try to consolidate as much into one bag as possible while maintaining sturdiness.  Plastic bags hold up to 10lbs and our company encourages us to pack it to the maximum limit.  I particularly don’t trust plastic bags and would only double them if they were canned goods or if they have sharp corners.  I’ve seen grocery clerks triple bag stuff and that’s unnecessary.  Many are just lazy or just don’t care which is sad because it gives us a bad name.

I have another question for you.

When you help a customer to their car with a loaded grocery cart, do you expect a tip?

There is one grocery store iI sometimes go to where the cashiers seem intent on using as many bags as possible, putting only an item or two in each one. As they swing them around on the revolving bag holder thingy, I take things out of bags and consolidate them myself. This generally earns me dirty looks but I don’t care – their way is wasteful.

Seems like it would be obvious to anyone over the age of 8

Secret agent woman- We must shop at the same store (the only one I have seen with the Lazy Susan bag holder). I do the same when they underload the bag. Or I ask them to put X, Y and Z into the bag with a few small items.

Oh, and Paul- thanks for answering my question.

Our bagging training video is so terribly cheesy… the link on the online training packet literally says “How To Build The Perfect Bag” and the slogan for bagging is “Shoot for 6!” meaning… try to fit at least 6 items in every bag to save on plastic.

I recall a cheesy video as well…but our slogan is “Strive for 5, but 8 is great!” I’ve developed a technique (as I’m sure all other clerks have as well) that seems to work pretty well. Love your blog, btw!
