Ways to Annoy your Grocery Clerk #25 – Price Match

by PkWynn on March 3, 2010

Grocery store prices always fluctuate. It has nothing to do with the economy, sometimes sale prices are better than others. Each week there is a new ad for items that are on sale throughout the store and the prices stand until the next ad. We cannot alter or match the prices of our competitors because it is against store policy. As much as we would like to accommodate the customer, its better to be safe than sorry.

At the customer service booth, a customer wants us to price match toothpaste that is 50 cents cheaper at our competitor down the street…

Match Me: [holding up the toothpaste] The store down the street has these for 50 cents cheaper.

Me: Okay…

Match Me: Are you going to match it?

Me: I’m sorry sir, we cannot price match our competitors.

Match Me: You’re going to let me walk down the street?

Me: Sorry.

He’s inching closer to the door.

Match Me: I’m leaving.

Inching closer to the door…

Match Me: Last chance, I’m going down the street.

Me: *Sigh*

I had a customer accuse me of price gouging a few weeks ago because we had an item come off the sale price and go back to regular price. She didn’t believe me that I don’t make up the prices. She said since my name tag said grocery manager on it that means I get to make up the prices for everything in the grocery department and I needed to sell it to her for the price that it has been for the last 2 months

I would never ever ask anywhere to price match!

If he wanted the the 50c off that badly, why didnt he just go to the store. The fact that he inched his way out to try and persuade you.. Well! Thats just moronic!

I wouldn’t ask a store to do that, but we use 3 different grocery stores and we know our prices, we try to stock up on stuff when it’s on sale.

My grandmother used to drive an extra 10 miles to get something that was 20 cents cheaper. Hmmm….

You should tell them to go to Walmart if they want to price match. I HATE going shopping with my in-laws because they price match EVERYTHING they buy. Ugh.

It amazes me when people do that! I get what I need, and I’m gone…why frustarate everyone to fight about price comparisons over a few cents, and who cares if they go somewhere else over fifty cents. Guess some people think they are that important!

These kinds of customers are so annoying. Around here, the new Walmart Super Center is our biggest competitor… I’m always hearing “This is cheaper at Walmart!” I always think, “Then why aren’t you shopping there instead of bitching here?”

This happens with fast food coupons and the customer will be like “I don’t want to go to the competition since I like your food better will you match with the coupon price?” uh no. My manager got so fed up one time she said “For the love of god just go to the competition its like a 10 second walk and hey! You’ll be saving money” ahh I wish that happened more often.
