There’s nothing wrong with writing checks. Some customers are just used to writing checks and balancing their checkbook. That’s fine but please don’t do it during checkout. Writing a check is the most time consuming way to pay but don’t extend the wait time by having the people behind you and your grocery clerk wait while you’re busy balancing the checkbook or writing the amount in the statement. Here’s a suggestion, after writing your check, give it to your checker to frank it and while the check is processing; there’s time to balance or write the amount in the checkbook.
Customer waits impatiently behind a little old lady writing a check. She waits for the lady to leave…
Check? What the Heck?: What is this? The dinosaur ages?
I smile at her as I scan her groceries.
Check? What the Heck?: Who writes checks nowadays? I only have to write them if I have to.
Then I notice her digging through her hand bag…

Me: Everything okay?
Check? What the Heck?: Do you have a pen?

To me checks in the grocery store indicate that the people don’t have the money in the bank yet, it’s a day or two before they get paid. I use debit cards or credit cards.

You can’t really count on checks to take 2-3 days to clear anymore. With more and more banks/systems going to the whole “check image” thing, a check can be scanned, and processed just a quickly as a debit card transaction.
Fortunately for some people, my store doesn’t yet do that. But i do know of a couple stores that will actually hand you your check back after you pay with it because they no longer need it!
It’s just MHO but checks take too long, cash takes too long, and even credit cards take too long. Debit is the fastest, and even then I hate waiting for the “APPROVED” notice.
