Grocery Cart Obsession

by PkWynn on April 1, 2010

*In other news, getting hit by stilettos hurts really, really bad. Sorry Wicked Shawn!

I have this weird obsession with shopping carts. I would count stray shopping carts that clutter the parking lot. It all started when my car was dinged several times by shopping carts because people are too lazy to push them into the corral. I would park my car far away from everyone else but it’s one of those things that are bound to happen regardless of what you try to do to avoid it. It made me realize how inconsiderate people are and for every cart counted, it gives me a gauge on how bad this problem has become and to see if last count tops this one. I guess it’s one of those OCD things and I do it every time I step on a store’s parking lot.

The other day I was shopping with my mom and when we came out of the store, I was immediately disgusted. I asked my mom to push the cart to our car while I stood in the parking lot counting the scattered shopping carts. 16 was the count. 16! This is absurd and it ties the highest total I had since I started counting. It could have been more but I see a clerk running out to retrieve as many as he could but from my count 16 is a high total. I even took a picture…

After taking the picture I turned to look where mom went…

MOM! THERE’S A PLACE FOR THOSE!

My own mother helped break my counting carts record. It’s now 17. Thanks mom.

I try to save any cars from getting dinged by moving stray carts to a better spot.

I usually grab a stray cart on my way in. I need one anyway.

I hate when people do not put their carts away…just one of my pet peeves!

Grocery carts with squeeking or lame wheels seem to be obsessed with me. They count the seconds unti they see me coming.

I hate shopping carts that have used tissues from the previous shoppers.

We have a few stores here that require a quarter to get a cart. All stores should have them.

LMAO @ your mom the record breaker:)

I either put my cart in the lot pen or take it back inside. It pisses me off when people are so lazy and leave them where they can damage vehicles. (I’ve had a ding or two myself)
It’s amazing that people can be bribed with a quarter, to do the right thing. If you shop at Aldi’s you have to put one in to release your cart and then you get your 25 cents back when you return it. A freakin’ quarter and every cart is in it’s place…go figure.

In the spirit of offering a solution rather than lamenting the problem I’ll pass along a cool idea being used by the relatively new Aldi markets in my home territory.

Their carts are all fastened together with lengths of chain, each with a lock that fastens to the cart ahead of it in line. Put in a quarter and the lock opens, and traps your quarter.

When you’re done, just put the cart in line with the others, lock it up, and your quarter is freed to return to your pocket. There are no carts in the Aldi parking lots! Too bad we need something like this, but it’s great too see that human ingenuity can cope with just about any problem.

You can always count on my, huh? The other week I had someone park their cart RIGHT behind my car the other day AFTER I had just gotten in my car! Didn’t see it and backed into it and dented my trunk. I so SO pissed!!!

BTW… have an award for you on my blog.

Scattering of push carts is the usual scenario in a groceries parking area. This can cause delay on the parking and the worst dents on cars. But we can avoid this if we are responsible of bringing back this on their designated area.
