The Stench that Stays

by PkWynn on June 17, 2010

I know its the summer time and everyone wants to wear clothes that are comfortable for the sweltering heat. But if you’re going to wear such clothing like say a tank top, PLEASE, PLEASE wear deodorant.

The stench follows the person responsible all over the store and leaves somewhat of a trail of bad odor that other customers and grocery clerks have to endure. Once other customers get a wiff of the toxic odor, their first impression is “this store stinks!” We get the blame for it. Like they automatically assume the grocery store is some unsanitary place. We’ll customers are able to go outside and get some fresh air but the grocery clerks, we have to stay in and absorb the fresh scent of toxic arm pit!

The aisles maybe filled with the toxic odor hovering within the air but it can quickly dissipate. The checkout lanes is a different story. You see an average transaction is about 2-3 minutes long which means the toxic odor is CONCENTRATED around the checkstand and will continue to stay for long periods of time. With the culprit gone, I now inherit the stench. I have to work in this toxic odor of armpit for several hours and checkout the brave souls that enter my domain. They would always give me a dirty look like I’m the person with bad hygiene but what can I say? “It wasn’t me,” sure buddy it never is…

Some customers are nice and go on with their business but some just want to say what’s on their mind:

Customer #1: Eww… let’s go to another lane.

Customer #2: Can’t you like spray it down or something?

Customer #3: [under her breath] Looks like someone needs deodorant…

Please save us the embarrassment and use deodorant or body spray.

Thank you.

My first job was at the FYE in the local mall. There was a customer that we referred to as “Stinky Larry”. We kept a can of Lysol and a can of air freshener at the registers because after he left, the stench remained. We had to disinfect the counters (he was a rather large, sweaty man and would lean on them…) and spray air freshener through the store after each one of his visits. >.< That was back when I was 16, I'm 21 now and a friend of mine that still works there says he STILL comes in at least once a week.

Word of advice to anyone. During the summer. During the winter. Wear deodorant no matter what you wear. Period.

Haha we get this SO much at our store. It’s not only from B.O., it’s also from other bodily functions. It’s disgusting.
