I usually don’t mind working on the holidays because of the extra pay but while I’m working I envy the customers that come in who are enjoying the day off. Customers love to rub in on how much I’m missing out on the beautiful day, the barbeque, and why it sucks to be at work. I try not to take the rub ins personally but it seems as if every other customer is reminding me.
Having a Blast: It was such an awesome day outside!
Me: Yeah, I can see that.
Having a Blast: Sucks to be at work huh?
Me: No its OK. We get paid double for working.
Having a Blast: 4th of July only comes around once a year so if I was you I’d try to get it off next year.
After the 10 o’clock firework show…
Having a Blast #2: Oh my gosh did you see that amazing firework show over the waterfront?
Me: No. But I heard it.
Having a Blast #2: HAHAHAHAHA!
Me: …
Having a Blast #2: Oh… Sucks you had to work.

My worst 4th of July was the one in 1993 when I bartended at a local French Basque restaurant. We had no windows and big heavy wooden doors, so all I could hear were the muffled explosions of fireworks, I couldn’t see a thing. There was a moment during the even when much of the bar cleared out for a few minutes while people went out side to see a fireworks shows that had just begun at a local park. I couldn’t go anywhere
Yes, I HATE when people do this! They’re always telling me that it sucks that I have to work. Well thanks for rubbing it in, buddy!
I DO like the ones though that thank me for working on holidays.
One year I had to work at a self-serve gas station on Christmas Day so the boss could be home with his family (which was fine with me, as I was single). Some of the few customers we had would say, “Too bad you have to work on Christmas.” To which I would answer: “If everyone purchased their gasoline the day before, we would not have to be open.” Most of them agreed that they had not thought about it that way. So now, I never buy gasoline or shop at stores open on Christmas or other major holidays unless it is an emergency.
