Ask a Grocery Clerk

by PkWynn on June 2, 2011

Question: I was just curious…do you ever have any of these “extreme couponers” come through your line, and if so, does it annoy you or is it kind of fun?

Answer: I don’t mind couponers. Even if they have bagfuls of coupons, they’re easy because all we do is scan them. What does annoy me when the coupon is expired or when it’s the wrong item and the customer keeps insisting I scan it anyways. Coupons have “fine” prints and we must abide to what is stated on them.

*Thanks Aly, you helped find another annoyance that adds to Ways to Annoy your Grocery Clerk List.

LOL…They do save on money…Its just such a hassle cutting them out then searching for the correct item…But they do make a difference

It does add some time to a transaction, but, generally, a person that’s good at coupons is pretty organized about it, and will most likely not have any expired ones and have a system down that is easy for a checker to work with.
It’s really quite fun, actually. Being a giant fan of cheap and practically free stuff, it comes off as an art form to me. I love watching an order that might otherwise be 30 or 40 dollars going down to a few cents. It’s like a fun game to me.

The answer is right on the money. Coupons are easy and all we do is scan them. A few weeks ago I had a woman come into the store. She was a extreme couponer. She had coupons for cat food that state buy one get one free. She bought 26 and with the coupons she was supposed to get 13 free not all 26. She got mad, had me call the manager, and yelled at another employee. She stated that it was for the recent pets at the shelter that were caught in the tornados. The manager was fed up with dealing with her and told me to override them and give her the discount. Then a week later she comes back into the store has a similar ordeal and throws a loaf of bread at another employee. Don’t see why they can’t throw her out the store. She doesn’t need to come in if she is going to do that.

I feel exactly the same way with couponers as a grocery checker myself. I actually think it’s pretty neat, but once they start to argue with me, I get agitated.
