Back in the day, checkers would have to count out change from their cash registers. Nowadays, grocery stores have automatic coin dispensers which puts less responsibility on the cashiers. The process is very efficient; checker hands the customer their receipt and paper change, all while the coin dispenser kicks out the leftover change.
